For anyone who thought a white Christmas in Africa was an impossible dream, Canal Walk presents Snow World, an indoor snow experience in the centre court. We headed there yesterday when it was swelteringly hot outside and the air conditioning in the car was going full blast. I was dressed accordingly in a short skirt, sleeveless top and open shoes. Inside the ice box the sub-zero temperature really hits you (kept at -5 degrees!) but luckily they do provide warm fleecy capes for those who didn’t have the sense to bring warm clothes. I brought along wellies and a warm jacket for my little one, and wished I had a pair too when the snow was squelching through the sides of my shoes!
They are open from 10am until 10pm until the 6th January 2013, and this is a wonderful opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit and give your children what is perhaps their first experience of snow. There is a play area with buckets and spades, ideal for making snow men, as well as an ice slide, ice climbing wall and toboggan slide. I got myself a non-rider ticket for R15 in order to supervise my three year old daughter, who made the most of her R60 rider ticket by fearlessly whizzing down the ice slide on a tube several times.
The sessions only last 20 minutes (hypothermia prevention perhaps?) which goes by far too quickly, especially for the price of the ticket, but this is a magical experience and highly recommended. If you’re bored with sitting on the beach every day holding a melting ice cream, you’ve got to get down to Canal Walk and cool off! You can buy tickets at Computicket online or at any outlet. There is a stand right outside the Snow World too.
