Smashbox Photo Op Eye Brightening Mascara

I have to apologise in advance to those of you who feel strongly about cruelty free makeup. I do not want to be a complete hypocrite but in this case I went makeup shopping on a tight time schedule with a four year old in monster mode, and just didn’t think about ethical issues. I might as well admit right now that I’m not always going to live up to my own standards, but I try my best.

Anyway, now that I have tried the Smashbox Photo Op Eye Brightening Mascara, what do I think? The reason I was intrigued enough to buy it is that it claims to “instantly curl by 100%” as well as lift every lash. It also apparently has Blue Prism technology which “brightens for a totally wide-eyed effect”. Lastly, it claims to be smudge- and flake-proof.

I agree it is smudge and flake proof, and it is a nice mascara. But “nice” doesn’t really win awards. It is as good as the Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume mascara I’ve been using, but I didn’t notice any real eyelash curling taking place and my eyes didn’t look brighter to me. That is curls by 100% is a bit of a wild claim, frankly. But I have to add that it does add nice volume.

This mascara is a reasonable price at R210, and I would recommend it if you are looking for a good all-round mascara, not particularly a lengthening or curling one. I am searching for the perfect lengthening and defining mascara, so this doesn’t meet those requirements. However, as I said before, it is a nice volumising mascara on par with the Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume one. I definitely like it a lot, I’m just not in love with it.

Such a pity aout is. I love the clinique one. If you are going to try one, the Inglot one I purchased for R139 is really great. I’ll try to do a review of it so or at least Instagram a photo to show you how it works for me 🙂

I think I should try it! Don’t get me wrong, the Smashbox one is as nice as the Clinique one, but I kind of wanted something a bit more interesting. Maybe my expectations were a bit high. I really want more length as opposed to volume. My lashes are pretty thick anyway.

I’ve been using an Yves Rocher mascara for the past 2 months and am in love with it. Adds on length with no clumping.
