Schwarzkopf Colour Mask Review

20131001-124437.jpgI have been having a few hair issues in the last month or so, entirely my own fault because I allocate a minimum budget to my hair. Between dry scalp problems, yellow tones and purple streaks I have been considering admitting defeat and asking a professional to turn me brunette. So I was really appreciative when I was offered two boxes of Schwarzkopf’s new Colour Mask in Pearl Blonde to try. Going blonde at home can be scary because there is always the possibility of ending up with yellow (or orange, it has happened to me) hair, but as soon as I saw the purple shade of the colour mask I felt much more confident that this wouldn’t happen. As you probably know, purple cancels out yellow or brassy tones.

The best thing about this hair colour is that it is so easy to apply because the cream is thick and doesn’t drip, and because the colour of it makes it easy to see where you have applied the mask and ensure you coat the hair evenly. Other hair colour I have tried has stung my scalp quite a bit after a while, but I didn’t experience that with this colour mask at all in the 45 minutes I had it on. And of course I had to Instagram the process…

I did find the thick mask a bit difficult to rinse off but the conditioner included in the box did a good job. I actually wish companies would bottle and sell the little conditioners they put into boxes of hair dye because they are pretty awesome. And the results were really pleasing. I ended up with a really nice Nordic blonde with no yellowish tinge at the roots. Compared to my “before” picture I could hardly believe the difference, or that my hair looked that bad before *cringe* but in defense I think I took that photo in bad light. It took away most of the odd tones I had, particularly towards the back of my head.

I should probably add that I did have a few very light purple streaks, but since this has happened to me before recently I think it is specific to my hair (it probably won’t happen to you, in other words) and it does wash out with a few washes. It is possible, or probable, that I didn’t rinse the mask off properly.

I felt my hair was a bit dry after using this, but it also had a lot more volume. I recommend using a treatment like a hair mask or oil the next time you wash your hair, and that will put any dryness to bed. I will definitely be stocking up on these the minute they hit the shelves. I used two boxes for my mid-length hair and I think this is essential to get full coverage and the best result. At R129.95 these are really well priced.

*A big thank you to Natalie van Heerden for sending me the Color Mask!

Do you think someone (like moi) who needs to have highlights done every 6 weeks will be able to use this? Will it lighten medium brown hair or does it only tone the hair i.e. remove the yellow tones? What I’m asking basically is will my regrowth still be there if I use this? You look like you’re a natural blonde, so it should be quite easy for a box colour to lighten your hair.

I’m looking for a mask that I can put on my hair by the 4th week when my hair starts to look a bit yellowish.

I def agree about companies selling the conditioners they put in their dye boxes, I remember the Garnier ones are amazing (back in the day when I had auburn hair).

It is a permanent hair colour so it will definitely lighten your hair. What shade you end up with will depend on the natural colour of your hair though. Mine is a dark blonde naturally with red and gold in it, so I never quite get all the gold out 100% but it will actually lighten your hair a lot, not just remove yellow. It’s scary to try for the first time!

I’ve just tried this myself and was also super happy with the end result – I also ended up with light purple streaks, but I actually like them, so I don’t mind. My friend just told me to take a look at your blog because it’s one of her favourites and I’m so glad I did. Thanks for the informative review! 🙂

That’s interesting to hear other people get purple streaks too! They do wash out though in a few washes. I use this every four weeks and nothing else gives me a real ash blonde without any yellow

That’s really weird! What colour is your hair naturally? I think it depends on your natural colour and what colour is on previously and the condition of your hair. But that still sounds really odd. Perhaps call the customer care on the box and ask them what they think?
