Remember I gave everyone a heads up in December that Stila has some new products arriving in early 2014? The one I mentioned was the Magnificent Metals Eyeliner, which I’m busy reviewing, and the other is the gorgeous Sweet Treat Bronzing Powder for Valentines Day.
I love that Stila releases a Valentines Day product every year and makes them an affordable, fun item for a special date night. I loved the All You Need is Love blush which I got last year, one of my first Stila purchases which got me hooked on the brand, and this bronzer is in identical packaging in a similar style. It is one of those very pretty products which captivates you before you even try it on.
The bronzer is reminiscent of, and inspired by, a bar of chocolate (and Valentines Day is synonymous with chocolate) with nine blocks. One shade is a peach colour, another an orange-toned brown, both of which made me worry that the bronzer would look a bit orange on my face, but they seem to be balanced by the cooler tones.
There are another two shades of brown and a milky latte shade which contains some shimmer. Only two of the nine blocks in the compact include shimmer, the others are matte, so the bronzer is luminous but not very shimmery or frosty, for those who prefer more matte bronzers. Sadly the raised lettering isn’t going to last long, as some of the letters were half-eradicated with my first use.
I’ve had terrible luck with bronzers. I’m a pale person, and they either look too orange, too red or are not pigmented enough. After fighting with my hardened Clarins bronzer for months I really had an aaaaah moment when my brush easily picked up a blend of the shades (it is soft enough but not messily powdery) and it applied easily. Let’s hope the phenomenon where my powders go weird and impossible to work with doesn’t happen to this. Might be because I live next to the sea. It is nicely pigmented, blends easily and looks quite natural.
There is a definite peachiness to the bronzer, but happily not in an Oros man way, and it isn’t so dark that pale-skinned people can’t wear it without looking odd. You can also choose whether to focus your attention on the middle of the compact where the darkest shade is, or swirl your brush around the edges if you want it slightly lighter. It has been a pleasure to use. These will be available from end Jan/early Feb at Stila counters and will retail for only R175 – which makes this a really sweet treat.
