Revlon Matte & Lacquer Balms

I’m having a serious lip crayon moment, having bought no less than five in the last month. Three of these were from Revlon, two of their new lacquer balms and one matte balm. Last summer I was a big fan of Revlon’s kissable balm stains, so when these started popping up on Instagram it knew I had to try them out. Within about a week of launching the colours I was interested in were sold out at my Edgars, but I found a really good selection at Woolworths in Canal Walk. I chose the lacquer balms in Ingenue and Tease and the matte balm in Elusive.

My favourite of the three is the matte balm, Elusive, (pictured centre) because it has really good staying power. The colour on my lips is a medium pink, cheerful without being overpoweringly bright. Although it looks matte it is still moisturising, so comfortable to wear. It applies evenly and doesn’t need building up, although be aware that they don’t all apply equally well as I’ve read several reviews saying the shade Mischievous can apply a bit unevenly. Also, make sure to buff your lips before applying the matte balms as they will slightly emphasize flaky areas. Both variants have a faint minty scent but I find the actual mintiness (is that a word?) isn’t as strong and tingly on the lips as the original kissable balm stains.

The lacquer balm in IngΓ©nue is a sheer nude, and Tease is a burnt orange. The lacquer balms contain what look like shimmer particles, but this doesn’t translate on the lips. IngΓ©nue and Tease both have a lustre to them without apparent glitter. They feel more balmy and hydrating on the lips than the matte balm, but the trade-off comes with the staying power. I found IngΓ©nue especially to wear off very quickly. These are great value at R120 and I like the range of shades. The simple packaging means they are also great for chucking in your bag, as I’m often paranoid my really expensive lipsticks will melt or the lid will come off somehow in transit.

Since doing this post I saw Julia from All Dolled Up has done a video review on these, so here’s the link if you want to see more shades in action and a giveaway!

These are available at Dischem for R110.00, hey. I have to pop back in and get Shameless (the purple one) – I tested it in store and can’t get it out of my head!
