Makeup Favourites 2014 {Part 1}

This is a bit delayed because we’re into the swing of 2015 now, but this is as good a time as any to cover my most-used and most-repurchased products of 2014. These makeup items are ones which I have either carried with me into 2015 or will repurchase during the course of this new year. Excuse me if there are rather a lot of them…it is like asking a mom which of her kids she loves best…so I split this post into two.

Best bronzer and highlighting products. As you can see my Diorskin Nude Tan has been well loved during the year. This is shade 003, but it works so well for paler skin. It isn’t orange and gives skin a healthy glow without being shimmery. Pricey, but such beautiful packaging and it is proving very long-lasting. The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer is the best highlighter I have ever tried. I’m zealous about highlighting and this champagne gold powder melts into skin and creates the perfect sheen to catch the light. It isn’t available here, but is very easy to order from Vivadream for $24 with free (and quick) shipping. I think I went through three Clarins Instant Light Brush-on Perfectors during 2014. I use shade 00 and use this in a triangular shape under my eyes, centre of my forehead, on my chin and around my mouth for a bit of highlighting and concealing in one. It comes in a nifty brush-on pen format at a much better price point than YSL Touche Eclat.

Best foundation and concealer. I tried a few different foundations in 2014, but the only one I actually repurchased was Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. This is probably the one holy grail foundation which I always need to have on hand. The way it creates light but sufficient coverage in a totally invisible way can’t be topped (in my opinion). Shade 20 is perfect for me during the summer. My favourite concealer of 2014 was Soap & Glory Kick Ass Concealer, but since we can’t get it here (I got mine from Boots in the UK) I also included Bobbi Brown Concealer Kit (I use shade sand) as it came in second place. Both come with a setting powder included to keep your concealer in place, but what I love about Kick Ass Concealer is that it has two shades, a creamier, more salmon shade for under eye circles and a more yellow shade with amazing lasting power for blemishes.

Best primers. Last year I fell in love with three primers, for different reasons. My favourite glowy primer was Chanel le Blanc Sheer Illuminating Base, while the Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base came out top for adding radiance and an extra bit of coverage at the same time. Shade champagne is slightly yellow which evens out redness very well too. Dior Pore Minimizer Skin Refining Primer is probably my favourite primer to date, as it melts away pores and fine lines and just makes your skin look amazing before you even start on your foundation. And it really does help makeup to last longer, which is really the point of a primer after all.

 Favourite mascaras. I tried a lot of different mascaras in 2014 and I generally liked all of them. I used Volume de Chanel for a long time and even repurchased it, but in the end I decided on my old favourite Diorshow Iconic Overcurl as my top mascara of 2014. It has a soft bristled wand which I just find more comfortable to use than plastic bristles, and does a great job of adding curl, volume and drama with minimal mess or fuss. And it’s easy to remove. A close second was Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme which makes me look like I’m wearing false lashes when I’m not – a definite top-three favourite of all time – and I also loved L’Oreal Miss Manga Mega Volume mascara this year. The purple was a fun change and it is so easy to apply and remove. Lastly I wanted to mention Gosh Catchy Eyes mascara because it is a great dupe for Dior It-Lash at a really affordable price, if length and definition are what you’re looking for.
