I recently got quite a few new bits of makeup from Bourjois and Max Factor when Cosmetiques de France had their launch event at the Cape Grace last month. I couldn’t make it, but Charlene from Pretty Please Charlie saw my bag there and took it upon herself to bring it home to me, proof that kindness does exist in the blogging world!
I don’t buy a lot of drugstore makeup because makeup goes far beyond something functional for me. It is my one little luxury in life, the same way other people collect handbags or jewellery or designer shoes. I do however love Bourjois, and it has been a long-time favourite drugstore brand of mine. Now that I think about it, most of my favourite makeup is French. Bourjois does amazing foundation and powders.
Among the new bits I got to play with where two Smoky Stories eye palettes and one of the new La Laque nail polishes. The quads have a light primer shade, two darker shades for creating a smoky eye, and one sparkle shadow to highlight. The one I received was Ocean Obsession. Considering that I only ever buy variations of nude when it comes to eyeshadow, this quad confounded me. Blue, on my eyes? You’ve got to be kidding. Coincidentally, the La Laque shade I received was called Only Bluuuue, a vibrant royal blue.
This is a very long-winded way of getting to the point, which is that I decided to get the hell out of my comfort zone and try a navy smoky eye paired with deep blue nails, and I ended up loving it! I was impressed with the Smoky Stories quad. Despite forgetting to use primer, the shadow lasted pretty well. It did fade and crease a bit by evening, but the majority was still intact by the end of the day. At R149.95 I think that’s pretty good value for money. The shades were really pigmented and easy to work with. I used my finger to apply the sparkle just to the very center of my eyelid – it was okay but not comparable to Bobbi Brown sparkle shadow, and it was the first thing to disappear. It’s fun to have a sparkle shade included though, especially for going out at night. The quad also comes in Grey & Night, Over Rose and Upside Brown. I think I’m going to buy myself the Over Rose – a combination of brown pinks – to supplement my large collection of nude palettes.
The five shades of La Laque polish will be available mid-July at selected Clicks for R104.95. They’re all bright shades which remind me of summer, but both the cobalt blue and deep cherry shades would work beautifully for winter. I’ve never in my life worn anything more than a pastel blue on my fingernails, so this was out the box for me. I do however love the La Laque formula, which is super opaque, applies quickly and streak-free and has an ultra-glossy finish. It was also fast-drying. It lasts pretty well event without a top coat. By the third day I had barely noticeable tip wear on the left hand and two chipped nails on the right hand due to constant picking. Considering most polishes don’t make it 24 hours on me, I think this formula is a winner.
So if you’re stuck in a makeup rut and want to add a bit of colour this winter, why not look beyond the traditional berry and plum shades and try some navy blue? I’d love to hear what you think of this look.
