REN has timed their new product releases pretty well. A warm, cosy and comforting cleanser and a new lip balm for chapped lips…what more could your frozen face want this winter? And considering it was already snowing in the Western Cape on the first official day of winter 2015, I think we are all going to need a bit of help.
I’ve been using the REN Rosa Centifolia Hot Cloth Cleanser and Vita Mineral Lip Balm for a while now. I was pretty excited about the hot cloth cleanser because this is my preferred method of cleansing. Especially now that winter is here, there is nothing I look forward to more than removing my makeup with a nice warm face cloth. It’s like cleansing and a relaxation exercise all in one.
As it’s from the same range as the Rose Centifolia Cleansing Water, which I have previously reviewed, I do notice some similarities. Firstly, I love the scent of it as always. It makes me happy. Secondly, both products do tend to sting my eyes slightly when removing eye makeup. This is the only thing which I think could be improved because both products should ideally be a one-stop makeup-removing and cleansing combo. I prefer to remove my mascara first with a makeup remover before starting my proper cleansing routine. I have quite sensitive eyes and have only ever found two or three products which don’t sting at all (REN No 1 Purity Cleansing Balm, the Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Oil and Balm Balm Frankincense Cleansing Balm, just FYI). I don’t think it’s a deal breaker for me because I still love using this cleanser.
The hot cloth cleanser improves your skin’s natural barrier against moisture loss, decongests and protects the venous capillary system. It has a lovely creamy texture which I find so soothing and it really does leave skin feeling clean but still nourished. I don’t feel I need to rush to my moisturiser afterwards. The hot cloth cleanser is available at selected Woolworths stores or REN online for R300 and comes with a cleansing cloth.
The Vita Mineral Lip Balm is available from 1st June. It contains honey, beeswax, shea butter and cocoa seed butter, vitamin E and calendula to soothe dry and chapped lips. It does not, as with all REN products, contain petroleum or mineral oil. This is also a very winter-appropriate launch as a lot of people suffer from dry lips in winter. It comes in a tube which I quite like – no dipping fingers into little pots. It isn’t a thick balm and feels a bit like vaseline on the lips, but I find it quite long lasting and my lips don’t feel dry again after an hour or two. It is worth mentioning that my lips aren’t chapped or peeling though, so I can’t comment on it’s repairing qualities. It’s just a nice, light-weight everyday lip balm with good ingredients a bit of a gloss effect. It has a light scent that reminds me a bit of Letibalm Pediatric. R150 at selected Woolworths and Foschini stores.
So there you go, a few new things to try for battling the winter cold and dry skin. Keep cosy!
