A few months ago I decided to take a break from blogging and social media to focus on the priorities in my life and to get my stress levels to a controllable level. When I decided to stop blogging it felt like a weight had lifted off my shoulders. The pressure of being a full-time mom, having a demanding job and feeling obliged to keep blogging, keep promoting, keep up with social media and keep photo-documenting everything in life made me feel like I was drowning. So I just switched off. So there is a bit of background on where I’ve been in the last month and a half.
My skin was in quite a bad state, because if you have slightly iffy skin then testing new products every week can be disastrous. Shortly before I made the decision to get back to basics I discovered Just Pure skincare, a local natural skincare line made with organic ingredients in small batches, free from alcohol, parabens, synthetic fragrance and sodium lauryl sulphate. And it just so happens that as my mental state has had a Spring clean, so has my skin.
I started off by ordering their Essential Cleansing Gel, Lavender Toner and Blemish Treatment Oil. I wanted to pick and pay for the products myself so that I would be under no obligation to review them, and it turns out that I have been so impressed that a) I’m writing this review and b) I have subsequently re-ordered from their site.
My skin cleared up dramatically after a week of using the Blemish Treatment Oil, (R109.00) and although I’ve had a few ups and downs since I began, my skin has now stopped breaking out completely. Containing jojoba oil, rosehip oil, frankincense and yarrow essential oils and Co-Enzyme Q10, it stops the spread of bacteria and promotes skin healing… And it does exactly what it says on the bottle! I’ve repurchased this already as it comes in a 10ml bottle (however this lasts quite a while as a little goes a long way).
I like the Lavender Toner, as it has antiseptic and antibacterial properties and really suited my skin – although it is great for all skin types. It comes in a 100ml hydrosol, (R127.00) and I think it definitely played a role in combination with the other products in clearing my skin. Having said that, there are several alcohol-free toners which I love so I don’t find this a must-have.
My absolute favourite product was the Essential Cleansing Gel. I originally got a 50ml bottle but have since bought a 100ml (R213.00) as this has made it to my list of top three favourite cleansers of all time. The full ingredient list is olive oil, castor oil, sweet almond oil, glycerine, sucrose laurate, and oils of vitamin E, cedarwood, frankincense and myrrh. The last two on the list sound a bit biblical… and I’m convinced this cleanser was divinely inspired. It is basically a cleansing gel/oil which emulsifies and leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft and moisturised. It does a great job of removing makeup too.
After about two months of using this simple three-product routine with Dr Hauschka Rose Day Cream my skin had cleared up completely and stopped breaking out, so I’ve since introduced a few other treatment products back into my regime. I can honestly say that my skin is looking the best it has all year. At the moment there isn’t much I would change about it, and that’s saying a lot.
As much as I love my high-tech skincare I’m convinced that sometimes you just need to take a step back and start fresh with a few simple building blocks to get the foundation right. This applies to skincare and to life in general.
